For the most accurate pitch

1. Stand square to the gable. Face the gable end straight on, centred on the peak, not from an angle.
2. Step back as far as you can and still see the whole gable, then zoom in so it fills most of the frame. Distance flattens perspective, so accuracy goes up the farther back you are.
3. Hold the phone upright and level. The live camera shows a level line; get it green before you shoot.
4. Let Auto find the roofline. With Auto on, the app scans the photo (on your phone, nothing is uploaded) and snaps the lines onto the rake edges. Check where they landed; you can always drag them.
5. Place the lines on the rake edges. Drag each dot to the ends of the left and right rake boards. Pinch to zoom in for precise placement. A magnifier shows what's under your finger.
6. Hip roofs work too. Stand square to the hip end and trace one sloped edge (eave corner up to the hip peak) the same way you would a gable rake. On a pyramid or 4-sided hip, measure each face from straight on.
7. Add the eave line along the fascia or a level siding course for an extra level check (optional).
